Gunjap InterviewsHi World, Gunjap Interviews today with JKL !!! Let’s Start

G – Who is JKL in the Gunpla Modelers World? And where do you come from?

J – I am currently living in Hong Kong although you always find me somewhere in Japan.  When I’m not traveling, I usually spend my time on lighting up my plamos, including both Gunpla and other sci-fi robotic stuffs.  Besides, I am one of the organizers of the local modeler group: “LOL Modelers (笑笑團 in Chinese)”.

G – When did you start building Gunpla?
And when did you made your first Custom?

J – I think it was some 30+ years ago when I started assembling my first Gunpla.  In fact, I start with tanks, fighter jets, motorbikes, and then Gundam when the first series

started broadcasting in HK.  During the late 70s early 80s, it is just impossible for a kid to find small light bulbs, not to mention LEDs, for plastic model’s modification,

although I have been dreaming “Would it be great if the eyes can be light-up?”
However, that was only a short ride as school and subsequently work occupied most of my time in Canada. It was until 2006 when I saw all those new stunning Gunpla kits in an

ACG show in HK…  With the wife’s permission (yes, this is extremely important!), I restarted my Gunpla Builder life!

JKL_Pic3_RX-78As for my very first custom, I may consider the 1/144 RX-78-2 that I built in 1981.
It resembled the most famous 0079 TV scene where the single arm headless Gundam firing its last shot… Well, too bad that I don’t have any digital records of that piece.

So, I should reconsider the HG 1/144 RX-78-2 Ver.G30 that I built in 2009 as my first custom 1/144 Gunpla. This particular piece was the first 1/144 scale Gunpla that I could materialize my childhood dream: a total of 14 LEDs were installed inside the body, 2 LEDs in the beam rifle, 1 in the beam saber and 4 on the Odaiba base as lamp posts; yet, all joints of the model are still movable as the original plain kit.

G – Do you have some inspiration for your creations?

J – Oh yes and there are three types of inspirations: My pieces’ illumination effects are usually motivated by the original anime’s artworks. The movability and details are inspired by fellow modelers and online resources. As for the custom color scheme, my wife! (LOL)

JKL_Pic5_VF-1SG – After you have finished snap-fitting a model, from where do you start to mod it?

J – I don’t usually snap-fit the full kit. When I consider “opening” a kit, I would already have all the ideas in mind…

G – What do you think about Gunpla in all the World? modelers, attitude, modelers behavior etc..

J – Every modeler has his/her own world of imaginations and I personally think that we should respect each other’s creativity and learn from others.

G – What do you think about GBWC Event?

J – Besides showcasing your work, it is a great platform for people to meet and share ideas, especially if one can advance to the final where they can get to know other

country’s fellow modelers. It is indeed much better than browsing their blogs.

G – Please some advices for modelers that wanna start building a gunpla for the very first time!

J – Drop your game consoles and go get a pair of cutters! There is nothing to stop your imaginations in the world of Gunpla…  Besides, don’t be shy to ask questions, there is always someone willing to help.

Facebook with occasional WIP: http://www.facebook.com/Jacky.JKL

Blog: http://jkl-plamotronics.blogspot.com (in Chinese)

Twitter: https://twitter.com/J__K__L (in Japanese)

G – Future Projects?

J – After finishing the Bandai 1/20 Brutishdog with IR remote controls, I am looking forward to try more automation in plastic models.  However, I am currently working on a special Japan based project with a few friends and hopefully we can make public announces before summer.

Thanks GuNjap for the interview, see you next time.

G – Many Thanks to JKL for this Interview ;-)
