The show is set roughly 300 years after a great conflict between Earth and Mars known as the “Calamity War.” A woman named Cordelia sets out on a journey to Earth to speak for the independence of the Martian city of Chryse, which is under the control of the Earth government. Escorting her is the private security company Chryse Guard Security (CGS), of which protagonists Mikazuki Augus and Orga Itsuka are members. When a group named Gjallarhorn attacks CGS and Cordelia, Orga sees this as a chance to rebel against CGS and launch a coup. Mikazuki and Orga are thrust into a new conflict. To fend off Gjallarhorn, Mikazuki rides the Gundam Barbatos, an old mobile suit powered by a nuclear reactor from the Calamity War.
The official website also revealed new visuals for protagonists Mikazuki Augus and Orga Itsuka, as well as other characters and mobile suits appearing in the show.
Tatsuyuki Nagai is helming the show at Sunrise, with Mari Okada handling the series scripts. Yu Ito (Shut Hell, Imperial Guards) drew the original character designs, and Michinori Chiba (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE) adapted the character designs for animation. Naohiro Washio, Kanetake Ebikawa, Ippei Gyōbu, Kenji Teraoka, and Tamotsu Shinohara are designing the mecha for the show. Kusanagi is in charge of art design, and Masaru Yokoyama is composing the music.
Nagai and Okada have worked together previously on the Toradora! and anohana (Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai.) television anime series, as well as the anohana film, and The Anthem of the Heart anime film coming this year.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans will premiere on October 4 in 28 channels in Japan. It will also be streamed online. The official website will provide more details on the broadcast and streaming schedule of the show in the future.
