His real name is Casval, the son of Side 3’s former leader, Zeon Zum Deikun. After escaping to Earth, he was adopted by Teabolo Mass and grew into a strong young man, watching over his sister Artesia (now Sayla). He will later conceal his identity and become Char Aznable, the Red Comet, an ace pilot of the Principality of Zeon forces.
Her real name is Artesia, the daughter of Side 3’s former leader, Zeon Zum Deikun. After escaping to Earth with her brother Casval and her pet cat Lucifer, she was adopted by Teabolo Mass. Leading a quiet life, she is growing into a kind-hearted girl who wishes that nobody would ever have to shed tears of sorrow.
A young man who meets Édouard (Casval) and Sayla (Artesia) at Texas Colony, one of the space colonies of Side 5. He and Édouard are the same age and identical in appearance, but have different eye colors. His specialty is horse riding, and he is the son of Roger, the chief manager of Texas Village. Due to his carefree upbringing and optimistic nature, he sometimes clashes with his sober and serious father. He will later enroll in the Autonomous Republic of Zeon’s military academy.
The son of Jimba Ral, a political enemy of the Zabi family. After carrying out a scheme to send his father and Deikun’s children to Earth, he took responsibility for their escape and retired from the military. However, at Dozle Zabi’s request, he rejoins the Republic of Zeon Space Defense Force with the rank of captain, and helps with the development of the revolutionary weapon known as the mobile worker which Dozle is pushing for. Ramba is a righteous man with a chivalrous heart, but he’s a heavy drinker, and it also appears that he sometimes gets scratched up by girls.
A singer at Club Eden, and Ramba Ral’s lover. She has a tomboyish personality and is remarkably dynamic. As an old friend of Zeon Deikun’s mistress Astraia, she assisted Astraia’s children (Casval and Artesia) in their escape to Earth. She is very concerned about the imprisoned Astraia, who has become gravely ill.
Overall height: 16.7m / Head height: 13.88m / Overall width: 14.6m
An early test version of the humanoid mobile weapon whose development and data collection is under way at the Dark Colony, for use by the Autonomous Republic of Zeon in the event of a war of independence. As per the cover story that this is a humanoid worker machine used for development and construction on the lunar surface, it has been given the name “mobile worker.” Lacking the refined style of a military weapon, it has the crude features typical of a worker machine, with an exposed cockpit as well as winches and lights mounted on its exterior.
The claw on its right hand, which appears to be meant for demolition work, increases its offensive strength. Its left arm is equipped with a bulletproof shield. When combat tests are conducted against the Guntank Early Type, this machine demonstrates dramatic new potential as a next-generation humanoid mobile weapon. The “mono-eye,” a one-eyed movable camera, has been adopted as its head sensor.
Due to technical issues, the fusion reactor on its back that serves as a power source is very large, which limits its mobility and maneuverability. Miniaturizing the fusion reactor will be a focus of the machine’s future development.
Overall height: 16.7m / Head height: 13.88m / Overall width: 14.6m
An improved version of the Mobile Worker Model 01 Early Type that the Autonomous Republic of Zeon has been developing. In order to gather data on close-range melee combat, the design of the cockpit area has been modified to protect the pilot. Another improvement is that the forearm attachments can be exchanged to serve different functions, and as well as equipping both arms with manipulators, it is also possible to replace them with various specialized working parts. In addition to minor design changes, it has also undergone improvements for attitude control testing in space. But since its basic structure is not greatly changed from the early type, issues such as miniaturizing the fusion reactor still remain. The machine’s coloring has been changed for melee testing, and the one piloted by Mash has been painted orange.
Overall height: 16.7m / Head height: 13.88m / Overall width: 14.6m
An improved version of the Mobile Worker Model 01, piloted by Ramba Ral. It is used to gather data on factors such as the structural damage and joint stress to which the mobile worker is subjected during melee testing. In order to collect data during mock battles between mobile workers of the same type, the two late type machines have been painted in different colors to make it easier to tell them apart by sight. The machine used by Ramba Ral, who is participating in these experiments as a test pilot, is painted blue. Aside from the difference in coloring, however, it is essentially identical to Mash’s machine.
The episode will run in 15 theaters in Japan for two weeks starting on October 31. Most of the staff and cast are returning from the first episode, but Nana Harada will replace Ichiro Itano and Kiyoshi Egami as unit director.
In the Japanese version of “Artesia’s Sorrow,” Shuuichi Ikeda and Megumi Han are reprising their roles as Edward Mass (later known as Char Aznable, formerly Casval Rem Deikun) and Sayla Mass (formerly Artesia Som Deikun), respectively. New cast members include:
Ayumi Fujimura as Mirai Yashima
Tohru Furuya as Amuro Ray, reprising the role from other Gundam series
Toshihiko Seki as Char Aznable
The episode’s story moves three years ahead to U.C. 0071. The story will follow the tearful separation of the siblings Casval and Artesia (before they became known as Char and Sayla). It will also feature more of the development of the mobile suits, particularly on the Zeon side.
The anime project adapts Yoshikazu Yasuhiko’s manga of the same name, which in turn is inspired by the first Mobile Suit Gundam anime’s story. The OVA’s first episode, titled “Blue-Eyed Casval,” premiered in a limited engagement in Japanese theaters on February 28. Anime Consortium Japan began a premium paid streaming of the episode with both the Japanese and English dubs on its Daisuki service on the same date. Right Stuf, in collaboration with Sunrise, offered the first volume in a Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo pack on April 24.
