Tomino created and directed the Mobile Suit Gundam anime in 1979, and he has since directed anime including Zeta Gundam, Gundam ZZ, Char’s Counterattack, Aura Battler Dunbine, and Gundam: Reconguista in G.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs Director’s Commendation is for people and organizations that have made outstanding achievements in cultural activities and contributed to the promotion of Japanese culture,
Awarded by the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs for those who have contributed to the dissemination of Japanese culture overseas and international cultural exchanges.
The candidates for the commendation are selected at the award meeting of the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs by experts.
The number of recipients in the Ordinary Year is 74.
Director Tomino received the award as “I have published many outstanding works as animation directors for many years and also made great contributions to the promotion of Japanese art culture”.
『機動戦士ガンダム』や『Gのレコンギスタ』といった「ガンダム」シリーズをはじめ、数多くのオリジナルアニメーションを監督し、国内外のアニメシーンに多大な影響を与えてきた富野由悠季監督が、令和元年度文化庁長官表彰を受賞した。
文化庁長官表彰は、文化活動に優れた成果を示し日本の文化の振興に貢献した人・団体や、日本文化の海外発信、国際文化交流に貢献した人に、その功績をたたえて文化庁長官が表彰するもの。有識者による文化庁長官表彰選考会議において被表彰候補者を選定し、文化庁長官が被表彰者を決定している。令和元年度の被表彰者数は74件。
富野監督は「永年にわたり、アニメーション監督として優れた作品を数多く発表するとともに、後進の育成にも努め、日本の芸術文化の振興に多大な貢献をした」として受賞した。
